The world changed 64 years ago when nuclear weapons were detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing nearly a quarter of a million civilians. Those weapons grew in size and numbers and became a real threat to the very existence of life on our planet. During the next decades of the Cold War, this was at the forefront of the world´s attention. Yet the end of the Cold War, rather than resulting in a world-wide effort for nuclear disarmament, has led to a troubling spread of military nuclear technology. As the number of countries who have developed nuclear weapons increases, so does the likelihood of a nuclear war. President Obama´s call for a world without nuclear weapons and a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia are important steps in bringing this critical issue back to the forefront. Nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation must go hand-in-hand. Non-proliferation can only be achieved through dialog and cooperation and by setting the example of disarmament. A world free of nuclear weapons is possible and necessary within our lifetime and we must ensure that this agenda returns to the center of the world´s attention.
